Carles Gil converts PK to lead Revolution past Atlanta United

Carles Gil

Carles Gil scored on a penalty kick in the 36th minute on Saturday afternoon, propelling the visiting New England Revolution to a 1-0 victory over Atlanta United.

Gil, who remains the only New England player to score this season, connected on his third goal of the year. Aljaz Ivacic recorded five saves for the Revolution (2-4-1, 7 points), who won their second game in three tries after dropping three of four games to begin the year.

Atlanta (2-3-3, 9 points) failed to pick up a point for the first time since March 16, despite holding possession for 56 percent of the time. Brad Guzan had six saves for United, who had 18 shot attempts.

Trailing by one at half, Atlanta had two chances in the first three minutes of the second, but Aleksey Miranchuk’s shot on goal was blocked, before Stian Gregersen had his header turned away.

Atlanta again squandered second-half opportunities, as four straight corner kicks proved fruitless with just over 20 minutes remaining. However, Atlanta’s best chances arguably came in the 85th and 86th minutes, as Jamal Thiare’s header bounced off the right post and Miguel Almiron’s shot from close distance was saved by Ivacic.

Atlanta thought it had secured the game’s first goal in the 28th minute, when Almiron slipped a goal past New England Ivacic, but after a lengthy VAR delay, the score was called off due to Pedro Amador being caught offside.

Six minutes later, Atlanta star Emmanuel Latte Lath was called for a penalty in the box, leading to Gil’s left-footed goal in the 36th minute, giving the Revolution a 1-0 edge. New England later had a pair of good looks from Peyton Miller and Ignatius Ganago, but both came up empty and the Revolution entered halftime with the one-score lead.

New England outshot Atlanta 10-6 in the opening half, with a 6-2 edge in attempts on goal. The Revolution also had five corners before halftime, to Atlanta’s one.

Atlanta will travel to face the Philadelphia Union next week, while New England returns home to host New York City FC.
