The Columbus Crew acquired defender Andres Herrera via loan on Tuesday from River Plate of Argentine Primera Division.
The loan will run through next summer for the Crew, who then will have the option to retain Herrera on a permanent transfer.
“Andres is a talented player, recently helping one of South America’s most prestigious clubs lift multiple trophies,” Crew general manager Issa Tall said. “He already has valuable experience at the club and international levels as he enters the prime of his career. His addition strengthens our roster as we head into this important stretch of the season, and we are excited to see the impact Andres can have on our team.”
Herrera, 25, scored two goals in 89 total matches over parts of three seasons for River Plate.
He made his debut for Argentina’s U-23 national team in the Pan American Games in 2019. He also represented his country in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
