FC Dallas holds off steady Real Salt Lake attack to salvage 1-1 draw

Anderson Julio’s goal early in the second half pulled FC Dallas even and Maarten Paes’ timely save late kept things that way in a 1-1 draw with short-handed Real Salt Lake on Saturday in a Western Conference match in Frisco, Texas.

FC Dallas (4-4-4, 16 points) is still searching for the winning formula at home, falling to 1-3-1 on its own pitch in 2025. Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake (4-7-1, 13 points) settled for a draw for the first time this season and has earned just four points over its past five matches.

The draw was the sixth in the past eight matches between the teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

RSL was the aggressive side from the opening kickoff, as Alexandros Katranis produced the match’s first scoring opportunity when he tested Dallas goalkeeper Paes from just outside the box in the second minute.

Salt Lake broke through in the 24th minute. Diogo Goncalves’ shot from the center of the box was knocked down by Dallas defender Osaze Urhoghide, but the rebound found its way to RSL’s Diego Luna. Luna dribbled the ball to his left and outworked a trio of defenders before unleashing a powerful, twisting shot that curled inside the left post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Dallas went to the half without a shot on target, but produced the equalizer in the 53rd minute. Julio, a former Salt Lake stalwart, swept in from the right sideline and carried the ball deep into the zone near the near post before uncorking a shot that beat RSL keeper Rafael Cabral to the lower right of the net.

Salt Lake was forced to play a man down for the final 22 minutes and stoppage time after William Agada fouled Paes in the goalmouth and was accessed his second yellow card of the match.

Despite playing with just 10 men, RSL continued to attack, as Goncalves then Dominik Marczuk forced saves from Paes in the 73rd and 88th minute, respectively, with Paes’ stop on the latter shot realistically allowing the home side to split the points.
