Minnesota United and FC Dallas walked off the pitch with a point apiece as they played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night in St. Paul, Minn.
Minnesota United (4-1-4, 16 points) was shut out for the second time in a row but extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches (4-0-4). The Loons also remained without a loss at Allianz Field (2-0-2).
FC Dallas (3-3-3, 12 points), which was without co-leading scorer Petar Musa (three goals, as well as team-high three assists), saw their winless streak reach three matches (0-1-2) while being held off the scoresheet in back-to-back matches. Dallas still has yet to drop a match on the road (2-0-3).
The Loons found their best opportunity to open the scoring in the 40th minute. Bongi Hlongwane somehow got a right-footed shot off while falling down inside the box, but the ball hit the right post.
Dallas had a pair of big chances early in the first half. In the ninth minute, Logan Farrington’s strong individual effort led to a laced attempt that was stopped by Loons goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. Then in the 10th minute, a shot by Anderson Julio was spilled by St. Clair before the Canadian international ultimately swallowed up.
Neither team was credited with a shot on goal in the second half until the 72nd minute, as Carlos Harvey’s threatening ball from the right flank found Hlongwane at the far post. But the South Africa international couldn’t get a clean touch to it.
Then, in the 78th minute, a chip into the Dallas box was met by a Luciano Acosta header that was tipped over the bar by St. Clair.
That was the last serious look at goal for either team as St. Clair finished the evening with three saves while Dallas keeper Maarten Paes had four.
Minnesota was also shown four yellow cards on the night to Dallas’s two.
