Inter Miami attempts rebound, Red Bulls chase road breakthrough

Javier Mascherano

Losing is unfamiliar to Inter Miami over the past year.

But after starting the 2025 MLS season on an eight-match unbeaten run (5-0-3), the Florida side has lost three straight across all competitions and will look to get back on track when it hosts the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.

Miami (5-1-3, 18 points) had its MLS run snapped with a 4-3 loss to Dallas FC on Sunday. That setback was sandwiched by a pair of losses to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, most recently a 3-1 decision in the second match on Wednesday. The Herons were outscored 5-1 on aggregate.

“We need to push and take a step forward and try to improve in all the facets because I think this team can do much better,” Miami coach Javier Mascherano said.

The club has conceded at least three goals in consecutive matches for the first time since Aug. 8 and Aug. 13 of last season, in Leagues Cup matches.

Miami is near the top of MLS in goals this season with 16 but will be challenged by a Red Bulls side (4-3-3, 15 points) that has allowed just nine goals through 10 matches.

“You can’t sit there in awe, because they will hurt you,” New York midfielder Peter Stroud said of Miami’s high-end talent. “I think that’s the most important. … Now I think we realize that if you do that, you’re only going to get punished, in a sense.”

New York, which is coming off a 1-0 home victory against CF Montreal last week, is still trying to find its first victory on an opposing pitch. The club is 0-2-2 as the visitor, one of just three teams in the Eastern Conference and five in MLS still winless away from home.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg, who is second on the team with three goals, hasn’t scored a goal since March 22, when he tallied twice in a 2-1 win against Toronto FC.
