Jordan Morris’ return gives Sounders more firepower vs. Rapids

With Jordan Morris back in the lineup, the Seattle Sounders’ attack looks much more dangerous.

Morris scored 15 minutes into his first start since March 1 on Saturday, leading the Sounders to a 3-2 victory at Sporting Kansas City. It was Morris’ 100th goal contribution in his MLS career.

The Sounders (9-6-6, 33 points) have gone undefeated (2-0-1) since participating in the Club World Cup and will look to continue that streak when they play host to the Colorado Rapids (8-10-5, 29 points) on Wednesday night.

Albert Rusnak and Jesus Ferreira also scored first-half goals for the Sounders, who held on despite allowing Sporting Kansas City to convert a pair of penalty kicks after intermission.

“Jesus and I have talked a lot about how we’ve been bummed we haven’t been able to play together this year,” said Morris, who has been sidelined by a pair of hamstring injuries. “His vision is incredible. To have a guy like that on the right side and Albert (Rusnak) on the left, it’s just so dangerous for us as a team. It was hard to watch some of those games because we were creating so many chances, I just wanted to be out on the field playing with those guys.”

The Rapids snapped a three-match winless streak with a 3-0 victory against visiting Vancouver on Saturday.

Rafael Navarro, Calvin Harris, and Andreas Maxsø scored for Colorado with Djordje Mihailovic assisting on all three goals. Goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who had been sidelined since May 14 after surgery on his right knee, made two saves in posting the shutout.

“We attacked, we defended, we moved the ball, we played some entertaining, energetic football,” said Rapids coach Chris Armas. “For me, around the world, that’s the benchmark.

“We’ll have a quick turnaround and get ready for Seattle.”

The Western Conference rivals played to a 1-1 draw on April 26 in Commerce City, Colo., with Danny Musovski scoring for Seattle and Mihailovic answering for the Rapids.
