LAFC draws with Red Bulls behind Denis Bouanga’s brace

los angeles fc, red bulls

Denis Bouanga scored his second goal of the match in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to give Los Angeles FC a 2-2 draw with the visiting New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.

Bouanga also scored on a penalty kick in the second half.

Emil Forsberg scored in the 81st minute to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead. New York’s other goal came on an own goal by LAFC’s Eddie Segura early in the game.

The Red Bulls (4-1-4, 16 points) stretched their unbeaten streak to five matches (2-0-3).

LAFC (3-3-3, 12 points) has tied their past two matches.

New York had a chance to win in the eighth and final minute of stoppage time but Elias Manoel’s left-footed blast pounded off the crossbar.

LAFC held a 15-8 edge in shots and placed six on target. The Red Bulls put just two on target.

Carlos Coronel had four saves for New York, while LAFC’s Hugo Lloris had one.

Both New York goals came off corner kicks by John Tolkin.

In the 81st minute, Tolkin booted the ball into the box and it bounced off some players and came to rest near Forsberg’s foot. He slammed a right-footer past Lloris for his second goal of the season to put the Red Bulls into the lead.

But the lead didn’t hold up as LAFC put on the heat. Bouanga received the ball and was near the top of the box when he drilled a right-footer that got by Coronel to knot the score. It was Bouanga’s fifth goal of the season.

The Red Bulls took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on the own goal by Segura.

Tolkin took a corner kick and directed it toward the net. Segura got his head on the ball but knocked it into his own net.

LAFC tied the score in the 67th minute when Bouanga drilled a penalty kick into the right corner of the net. The corner kick was awarded due to New York’s Sean Nealis fouling Bouanga in the box.

LAFC’s Aaron Long sustained a right leg injury when he slid into the goalpost while defending New York’s Dante Vanzeir in the fifth minute. Long was in intense pain while being examined by trainers and was helped off the field three minutes later and replaced by Segura.

It was Long’s first career game against the Red Bulls since joining LAFC as a free agent prior to the 2023 season. Long played six seasons with New York and was 2018 MLS Defender of the Year.
