M Osvaldo Alonso announces retirement after 15 MLS seasons

Defensive midfielder Osvaldo Alonso, who spent 15 seasons in MLS, including 10 with the Seattle Sounders, announced his retirement on Monday.

The 38-year-old, who scored 13 MLS goals with 27 assists in 349 games, played sparingly for Atlanta United in each of the past two seasons. He won an MLS Cup title with the Sounders in 2016.

“Reflecting on the journey, grateful for every step,” Alonso wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Alonso also spent three seasons with Minnesota United (2019-21). After arriving from Cuba, he played one season for the USL’s Charleston Battery as a 22-year-old. Alonso defected while on a trip with Cuba’s national team in the United States.

In addition to his one MLS Cup title, Alonso helped the Sounders to four U.S. Open Cup titles and a 2014 Supporters’ Shield for top regular-season record. He played 28,333 career MLS minutes.
