Petar Musa’s hat trick helps FC Dallas top Minnesota United

FC Dallas, Minnesota United

Petar Musa scored a hat trick as FC Dallas scored a season-high five goals en route to a 5-3 victory over Minnesota United on Wednesday night in Frisco, Texas.

Logan Farrington had a goal and an assist, Sebastian Lletget had two assists and Jesus Ferriera also scored for Dallas (5-8-5, 20 points) which improved to 2-0 under interim head coach Peter Luccin. Maarten Paes made four saves for the Toros, who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Bongi Hlongwane had a goal and an assist and Hassani Dotson and Wil Trapp also scored for Minnesota United (8-5-5, 29 points). Clint Irwin, making his third consecutive start with starter Dayne St. Clair away for international duty with Canada, finished with three saves.

Musa, who entered the contest with a five-game goalless drought, gave Dallas a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, fielding a long pass from Paul Arriola on the right side of the box and then rolling a right-footed shot inside the far post.

Minnesota tied it 1-1 in the 32nd minute when an unmarked Hlongwane flicked in a header from the middle of the six-yard box off a curling Joseph Rosales corner kick for his fourth goal.

Musa made it 2-1 six minutes later with a right-footed shot from the center of the box. Hlongwane nearly tied it four minutes later but his right-footed shot in the middle of the box off a Caden Clark cross sailed just over the crossbar.

Dotson tied it in the 57th minute with his third goal, a right-footed shot outside the box that caromed off the hand of Paes and then the left post and rolled across the goal line.

Musa completed his hat trick and put the Toros back ahead to stay 3-2 in the 62nd minute with a right-footed shot from the middle of the box, his eighth goal of the season.

Ferriera extended the Dallas lead to 4-2 in the 75th minute with his fourth goal, fielding a long pass from Farrington and then firing a right-footed shot from the left side of the box inside the far post.

Farrington made it 5-2 in the 90th minute with his first goal, a left-footed shot inside the right post.

Trapp finished the scoring in the ninth minute of stoppage time when he converted a penalty kick for his first goal since August 2021 after Farrington picked up a yellow card for a handball inside the box.
