Petar Musa’s last-gasp penalty kick 10 minutes into second-half stoppage time lifted visiting FC Dallas to a wild 2-2 draw with their Lone Star State rival Houston Dynamo FC on Saturday in a late-season Western Conference clash.
Musa’s goal, his franchise-record 20th of the season, came after Ran Binyamin worked to earn a foul on Houston’s Duncan McGuire just inside the penalty area. Musa beat Dynamo goalkeeper Jonathan Bond to the bottom left-corner to knot the score.
FC Dallas (14-7-9, 51 points) have lost just once in their last nine matches (5-1-3).
Mateusz Bogusz’s penalty kick four minutes into added time put Houston on top but the Dynamo could not hold on. Houston (13-9-8, 47 points) is winless it its past six matches (0-2-4) and earned a draw for the second time in four days.
The Toros struck first, turning the match’s initial shot on target into Christian Cappis’ goal in the 12th minute. After passes from Bernard Kamungo and Daniel Job, Cappis ripped a left-footed shot off the heel of Houston defender Artur, with the deflected ball bouncing over Bond and into the upper-right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
FC Dallas made a bid to double their advantage in the 29th minute when Job worked to draw a penalty in the box from the Dynamo’s Agustin Resch. Musa took the shot from the spot but was stopped by Bond with a dive to his left, keeping the margin at just one goal.
Those were the only two shots on target in the half, with FC Dallas earning a 4-1 edge in total shots while Houston dominated the rest of the statistics (including a 376-187 edge in total passes and a 61.3-38.7% edge in possession) over the first 45 minutes.
Job tested Bond with a near-point blank shot in the 47th minute. Two minutes later, the Dynamo earned a corner kick that Guilherme curled to the back post and found Hector Herrera, who outjumped three Dallas defenders to head the ball off Dallas keeper Daniel and into the upper-middle of the goal to produce the equalizer.
Santiago Moreno bore down on Bond in the 67th minute and blasted a shot off the Houston keeper that bounced high in the air toward the Toros’ Herman Johansson, who headed it into the net. But VAR showed that Johansson was offside and took away the goal.
