After tying 2-2 through regulation time, the Colorado Rapids defeated the Philadelphia Union 3-1 on penalty kicks to win third place in the Leagues Cup on Sunday in Chester, Pa.
Djordje Mihailovic, Cole Bassett and Andreas Maxso converted their penalty kicks for Colorado, which qualified for the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup with the third-place finish.
Tai Baribo scored both Union goals in regulation, but during penalties his shot was saved by veteran Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen. Jack Elliott found the back of the net for the Union after they’d already fallen behind 3-0, but the match was decided when Olivier Mbaizo missed off the crossbar on Philadelphia’s next attempt.
Calvin Harris scored in the 38th minute for the Rapids before Baribo managed two goals in a three-minute span for the Union before halftime. Oliver Larraz scored the match-tying goal in the 49th minute for Colorado.
Steffen finished with four saves.
