Jack McGlynn scored on a sensational strike from distance in the 79th minute and the Philadelphia Union rallied from two goals down to a 2-2 draw at D.C. United on Saturday night.
McGlynn’s second goal of the season, struck with his left foot from about 30 yards out, came after Alejandro Bedoya scored his second just before halftime to give the Union (3-2-5, 14 points) a lifeline to avoid their third consecutive defeat.
The draw extended Philly’s unbeaten run against D.C. (3-3-5, 14 points) to five matches, a stretch that dates back to August 2021.
Cristian Dajome scored his first goal of the campaign and Jacob Murrell added the first of his pro career for D.C., which has now lost 12 points from a winning position this season.
Jared Stroud made passes to set up both goals to tie his career high with five assists in only his 11th appearance.
The Union may have lost back-to-back home matches coming into this fixture, but they’ve now earned draws after conceding two-goal deficits in consecutive away games.
Unlike the previous 2-2 affair on April 14 in Atlanta, this time the way back was gradual, with the visitors first gaining some badly needed momentum with Bedoya’s 42nd-minute tally.
It came from a set piece. Kai Wagner served the free kick from the left and Bedoya beat his marker to the near post to flash a first-time finish past D.C. goalkeeper Alex Bono.
D.C. looked more likely to get the game’s fourth goal for much of the second half. And not long before McGlynn’s leveler, Union defender Nathan Harriel headed Ted Ku-DiPietro’s goal-bound effort off the line to keep Philly in reach.
McGlynn then leveled in spectacular fashion after he was allowed space to dribble forward when he received the ball about 35 yards out in the second phase of play following a corner kick.
He punished D.C.’s defense, letting fly on an effort that left Bono zero chance as it sailed away from his dive and into the top left corner.
