Wikelman Carmona scored the tiebreaking goal in the 85th minute as the host New York Red Bulls earned a crucial 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night in Harrison, N.J.
Carmona scored his second career MLS goal and first since July 31, 2021, also against New England. He helped New York (6-7-8, 26 points) improved to 4-3-1 in its past eight matches after entering the game as a substitute in the 73rd for Dante Vanzeir.
New England (10-4-7, 37 points) saw the longest active unbeaten streak in the MLS halted at seven games (3-0-4).
Carmona’s goal occurred after a careless miscue by New England. After goalie Djordje Petrovic made a soft goal kick, midfielder Matt Polster lost the ball near the box to Omir Fernandez.
Fernandez then found Carmona, who blasted a left-footed shot from outside the box into the top left corner that easily sailed past Petrovic.
After Carmona’s goal, Andrew Farrell scored off a corner kick in the 93rd but the goal was waved off when video review determined New England’s Giacomo Vrioni interfered with goalkeeper Carlos Coronel while in an offside position.
Carmona scored after New England scored its seventh goal this year off a set piece when Brandon Bye put a header past Coronel in the 76th after Cameron Harper fouled Ryan Spaulding, resulting in a yellow card.
After Gustavo Bou perfectly executed the corner kick, Bye easily won a 1-on-1 matchup with Harper and whipped a header into the net past Coronel.
The Revolution played with 10 players after Latif Blessing was shown a red card for tripping Frankie Amaya in the 60th.
Before getting fouled, Amaya scored the first goal in the 58th when he blasted a shot past Petrovic.
Coronel made his only save in the 37th minute when he made a sliding stop on Emmanuel Boateng.
Petrovic made five saves against the Red Bulls, who controlled possession for 57.5 percent of the match, had eight shots blocked and seven other attempts miss the net.
