Reports: Warriors’ Andrew Wiggins remains unvaccinated

Andrew Wiggins

Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins reportedly remains unvaccinated, jeopardizing his availability to start the 2021-22 season.

The city of San Francisco, where the team plays its home games at the Chase Center, has required proof of COVID-19 vaccination for large indoor events since Aug. 20.

The San Francisco Chronicle and ESPN, citing league sources, reported Wednesday that the 26-year-old Wiggins has not changed his mind about getting the vaccine since comments he made earlier this year.

“To each his own, really. Whoever wants to get it, can get it; whoever doesn’t want to get it, don’t get it,” Wiggins said on March 22. “Right now, I’m not getting it, but it’s no knock on anyone else that’s getting it. I make my own decisions. But right now, I decided not to get it.”

Mind Remains Unchanged

At the time, Wiggins said he was waiting for more information. According to the Chronicle, the Warriors put him in touch with an Oakland physician to discuss his hesitancy, but Wiggins did not change his position.

Golden State’s preseason home opener is Oct. 6 against the Denver Nuggets. The Warriors open the regular season against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Oct. 19 before hosting the Los Angeles Clippers on Oct. 21.

Wiggins was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and the 2014-15 NBA Rookie of the Year.

He averaged 18.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 71 games (all starts) for Golden State last season. His career clips include 19.5 points and 4.4 boards in 525 games (all starts) with the Minnesota Timberwolves (2014-20) and Warriors.
