Anfernee Simons puts up 34 as Blazers best 76ers

trail Blazers, 76ers

Anfernee Simons scored 34 points and Shaedon Sharpe and Donovan Clingan each posted a double-double as the Portland Trail Blazers continued their strong road trip with a 119-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday.

Sharpe registered 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, while Clingan totaled 13 points, 13 boards and three blocks. Simons made six 3-pointers, and Duop Reath knocked down three treys en route to 13 points.

The Trail Blazers improved to 4-1 on their seven-game road trip, which continues this week with challenging contests in Boston and Oklahoma City.

Philadelphia, which has lost 10 of its past 11 games, continued to play without Joel Embiid (knee), who is sidelined for the season. Paul George (groin) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (illness) also sat out this one, while Tyrese Maxey left with a back contusion after taking a hard fall in the third quarter.

Andre Drummond paced the Sixers with 25 points and 18 rebounds — both season highs.

Portland trailed by five points at halftime, but the visitors erupted for a 14-3 run to open the third quarter. Sharpe got the second-half party started with a 3-pointer before Simons reeled off 12 points in about 3 1/2 minutes.

Philadelphia whittled its deficit down to 80-79 with about three minutes left in the third quarter, but Portland responded with an 11-2 run to close the period. Simons set up back-to-back 76ers buckets during that burst — a dunk by Deni Avidja and a 3-pointer by Reath.

Simons opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, and the visitors cruised to the finish line.

The Sixers jumped out to a 20-9 advantage after just over five minutes had elapsed. Maxey made a 3-pointer early in that surge before Guerschon Yabusele drained two from beyond the arc. Justin Edwards’ 3-pointer made it an 11-point margin, prompting Portland to call timeout.

The visitors chipped away gradually and eventually caught up at 29-29 in the final minute of the opening period. Adem Bona’s three-point play on the other end sent the Sixers into the second quarter with a three-point cushion.

Drummond scored 10 points in the second quarter as Philadelphia took a 61-56 lead into the break. Included in that burst was a rare 3-pointer by the veteran center, who finished the first half with 16 points and 11 boards.
