The Dallas Mavericks assigned Anthony Davis to the Texas Legends of the G League on Monday as part of his rehabilitation from a left adductor strain.
The move should give Davis a greater chance to practice, even though the team hasn’t said when — or if — he will return this season. The Mavericks are on the road for five of their next six games, through March 29, and spending time with the Legends will allow him to take part in 5-on-5 scrimmages.
Davis, 32, was the big return for the Mavericks in the Feb. 1 trade that sent superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Davis was in the midst of a sparkling debut with Dallas against the Houston Rockets on Feb. 8, collecting 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks in 31 minutes before leaving late in the third quarter because of the injury.
He has been sidelined since.
Playing in his 13th NBA season, the 10-time All-Star is averaging 25.7 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.2 blocks in 43 games (all starts).
The Mavericks also sent guard Jaden Hardy to the Legends. He has missed the past seven games because of a sprained right ankle. Hardy, 22, is in his third season with Dallas and is averaging 8.0 points and 15.2 minutes over 46 games (three starts).
The injury-riddled Mavericks entered Monday at 33-36 and in 10th place, occupying the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. On the day the trade was made, they were 26-23 and in eighth place.
