The Memphis Grizzlies dealt former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart to the Washington Wizards at Wednesday’s trade deadline, ESPN reported.
Memphis also sent a 2025 first-round pick to Washington in exchange for two second-round picks, center Marvin Bagley III and guard Johnny Davis, per the report.
Smart, 30, has endured two injury-plagued seasons with the Grizzlies after playing his first nine seasons with the Boston Celtics. He was the DPOY in 2021-22 and made the NBA’s All-Defensive first team three times with Boston.
The veteran guard has played only 19 games (six starts) this season, averaging 8.7 points and 3.7 assists. He missed 21 games with an injured index finger before returning for Tuesday’s 138-107 win at Toronto.
Smart played only 20 games for Memphis in 2023-24 because of multiple injuries to his hand and ankle.
Smart has career averages of 10.6 points, 4.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 620 games (386 starts) with the Celtics and Grizzlies.
Bagley, 25, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by Sacramento. He averaged 4.9 points and 2.9 boards in 19 games (one start) this season for Washington.
Davis, 22, was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by Washington. He averaged 2.4 points in 34 games (no starts) this season for the Wizards.
