Report: Nets sending Royce O’Neale to Suns

royce o'neale

The Phoenix Suns are acquiring forward Royce O’Neale as part of a three-team deal that also includes the Memphis Grizzlies, The Athletic reported Thursday.

Memphis will be sending forward David Roddy to the Suns in exchange for a pick swap as part of the deal, per the report.

Meanwhile, Phoenix will get three second-round picks from the Nets. The Suns are shipping out Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin and Chimezie Metu, too, and forward Yuta Watanabe is expected to be routed from Phoenix to the Grizzlies.

O’Neale, 30, was in his second season with Brooklyn after five with the Utah Jazz. He averaged 7.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 49 games (six starts) with the Nets in 2023-24.

In 495 career games (289 starts) with Brooklyn and Utah, O’Neale has posted averages of 6.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

A first-round draft pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2022, Roddy, 23, spent parts of two seasons with Memphis — his only NBA action. This season, he is averaging 8.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists.

Roddy played in 48 games (13 starts) for the Grizzlies this season.

The 29-year-old Watanabe averaged 3.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 29 games off the bench with the Suns this season. He will be returning to Memphis, where he spent the first two seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20) of his career.

In 208 career games (nine starts) with the Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Nets and Suns, Watanabe has averaged 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds. He is shooting 37.7 percent from deep in his career.

Bates-Diop (4.5 points per game, 2.6 rebounds per game), Goodwin (5.0, 2.9) and Metu (5.0, 3.0) were primarily used off the bench this season, combining to make 13 starts for the Suns.
