Baylor Scheierman notches sixth straight double-double as Creighton tops Butler

Baylor Scheierman

Baylor Scheierman scored 27 and Ryan Kalkbrenner added 21 to lead No. 17 Creighton to a revenge win on the road against the host Butler, 79-57.

Scheierman also grabbed 10 boards, making it his sixth straight double-double, the longest such streak at Creighton since 1985. Trey Alexander added 15 points and eight rebounds while Steven Ashworth scored 12 with eight assists.

Jalen Thomas led Butler with 18. Posh Alexander added 13 points (all in the first) and DJ Davis scored 12.

The first half was once again tightly contested, but was much more low-scoring than the previous record-setting offensive matchup between these teams in which Butler won 99-98.

On Saturday, Butler went into the break with a 1-point edge, 35-34, after having a slim advantage for a majority of the half. Alexander led with 13 and Thomas added 12, including two 3-pointers after previously making just one this season.

In the second, Creighton quickly built a sizable lead. In the first few minutes of the half, they gained a double-digit edge, and later went on a 7-0 run to give themselves a 16-point lead.

The Bluejays had a stretch in the second half where they made 8 of 10 shots they took from the floor, building a lead as high as 22. They shot 57% from the field and 6-for-14 from deep in the second half.

All this while Butler failed to score for the final 5:39 of the contest. After shooting 50% from the floor in the first, the Bulldogs went just 10-of-32 (31%) from the floor in the second. They made just one 3-pointer after going 5 of 11 in the first.

Creighton evens the season series after that upset loss earlier this season. Coming into today they were 4-9 against Butler in Indianapolis.
