Clemson pounds Georgia Tech, 81-57

Ian Schieffelin scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting to help Clemson cruise to an 81-57 victory over Georgia Tech on Wednesday night in Atlantic Coast Conference play at Atlanta.

Chase Hunter made four 3-pointers while recording 18 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Tigers (18-8, 8-7 ACC). Joseph Girard III had 14 points and PJ Hall scored 11 as Clemson won for the fourth time in its past five games.

Kyle Sturdivant scored 14 points for Georgia Tech (11-16, 4-12), which lost for the eighth time in its past 10 games. Tafara Gapare added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets.

Miles Kelly had eight points and became the 48th player in Georgia Tech history to score 1,000 for his career. He hit the mark by making two free throws with 13:24 left in the game.

The Tigers shot 53.4 percent from the field, including 14 of 29 from 3-point range.

Georgia Tech connected on just 30.2 percent of its shots overall and was 6 of 21 from behind the arc.

Schieffelin’s basket capped an 8-2 run to start the second half as the Tigers opened up a 51-33 lead.

The lead was again 18 when Hunter drained a trey to make it 59-41 with 10:10 left. Hunter connected on another 3-pointer to make it 62-43 with 7:52 remaining.

Clemson’s lead reached 20 when Jack Clark connected on a 3-pointer to make it 65-45 with 7:07 left.

Hunter’s driving layup made it 77-51 with 3:06 left, and the Tigers closed it out.

Schieffelin scored 13 first-half points and Hall added 11 as Clemson led 43-31 at the break. Naithan George had seven points in the half for the Yellow Jackets.

The game was tied at 9 before the Tigers ripped off 14 straight points. Hall capped the spurt with a jumper to make it 23-9 with 14:35 left in the first half.

Georgia Tech later trailed by six before Clemson went on a 15-4 run. Schieffelin, Clark and Hall all hit 3-pointers during the outburst as the Tigers took a 43-26 lead.

The Yellow Jackets answered by scoring the final five points of the half.
