Duncan Powell, Javian McCollum help Georgia Tech top Notre Dame

Duncan Powell and Javian McCollum both scored 21 points to help Georgia Tech to an 86-75 win over Notre Dame on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Powell came off the bench to shoot 6-for-13, including three 3-pointers, and scored his career high. McCollum was 7-for-13 from the field to net his season high.

Powell’s dunk with 2:44 gave Georgia Tech an 11-point lead and finished a 7-0 run that helped the Yellow Jackets quash a second-half Notre Dame push. The Irish had trimmed a 19-point lead to three points with 5:53 remaining.

Georgia Tech (7-7, 1-2 ACC) ended a three-game losing streak to Notre Dame (7-6, 1-1).

Georgia Tech also got 14 points from Lance Terry, 11 points, six assists and five rebounds from Naithan George and 10 points and six boards from Baye Ndongo.

Notre Dame was led by Tae Davis with 27 points, matching his career high, and seven rebounds and Matt Allocco with 15 points and seven assists. Braeden Shrewsberry scored 12 points, all in the second half.

Notre Dame played its seventh consecutive game without leading scorer Markus Burton, who suffered a non-season-ending MCL injury on Nov. 26.

Georgia Tech began fast and never let up in the first half. The Yellow Jackets got off to a 7-1 lead and had runs of 8-0, 7-0 and 8-0, building a 43-24 halftime lead after Powell connected for a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left.

The 24 points were the fewest allowed in a half by Georgia Tech this season. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Irish 9-0 on turnovers, 10-0 on fastbreaks and 7-2 in second-chance points while shooting 60.7 percent in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets led 55-36 after George hit a jumper with 15:08 remaining, only to have the Irish go on an 11-0 run punctuated by back-to-back 3s by Shrewsberry to cut the lead to 55-47 with 12:32 remaining.

Notre Dame got within three on Allocco’s basket at 5:53 but Terry answered with six straight Georgia Tech points and the Irish never got closer than seven the rest of the game.
