Florida State races past Georgia Tech for fourth win in five games

Taylor Bol Bowen scored 20 points to help lead the Florida State Seminoles to a 91-78 win over the visiting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Saturday in Atlantic Coast Conference play in Tallahassee, Fla.

Malique Ewin had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Seminoles (13-5, 4-3 ACC), while Jamir Watkins also scored 17 as Florida State won its fourth game in five tries.

Duncan Powell netted 20 points as the Yellow Jackets’ only reserve to check into the game. Javian McCollum also scored 20, Lance Terry tallied 23 points and Baye Ndongo collected a game-high 12 rebounds for Georgia Tech (8-11, 2-6) in its fourth straight loss.

After trailing by 13 at halftime, George and Terry opened the second half with baskets, jump starting a 10-0 run that closed Georgia Tech to within 37-34. Chandler Jackson’s layup followed by Bol Bowen’s five straight points pushed Florida State’s lead back to 10 with 15:39 left.

Terry’s 3-pointer cut Georgia Tech’s deficit to 50-44, but the Seminoles went on an 8-2 run to extend their advantage to 12 with 11:15 left.

With 5:09 remaining, Terry’s 3-pointer trimmed Georgia Tech’s deficit to 70-66 before Ewin’s jumper and Daquan Davis’s three-point play began a 21-12 Florida State run to end the game.

The Seminoles outshot the Yellow Jackets 52.2 percent to 43.3 percent for the game and held a 44-28 advantage in points in the paint.

Florida State went up by double figures less than five minutes into the game after Watkins and Jerry Deng knocked down consecutive 3-pointers to push the Seminoles’ lead to 15-4 at the 15:02 mark.

Deng added another triple to key a seven-point spurt that pushed Florida State ahead 23-8 with 11:05 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets later responded with seven straight points to close within single digits before baskets by Christian Nitu and Holt’s baskets gave the Seminoles a 30-17 lead.

Terry’s dunk and Powell’s free throws pulled Georgia Tech within nine, but Bol Bowen’s dunk began another 7-0 run, bringing Florida State’s lead back to 16.

Powell’s 3-pointer cut Florida State’s halftime advantage to 37-24. Watkins led the Seminoles with nine first-half points, while Powell’s 11 paced the Yellow Jackets.
