Freshman Thomas Sorber helps Georgetown rout UMBC

georgetown

Thomas Sorber finished with 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Georgetown to an 86-62 win over visiting UMBC on Monday night in Washington, D.C.

Jayden Epps added 16 points as the Hoyas (7-1) won their fifth straight game and concluded an eight-game homestand to open the season.

Earlier Monday, Sorber was named Big East Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, then went 11 for 12 from the free-throw line.

Malik Mack scored 13 points and Caleb Williams added 10. Micah Peavy had a strong all-around game of seven points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Georgetown forced 21 turnovers and scored 52 points in the paint.

Josh Odunowo scored 18 points and Marcus Banks added 16 as UMBC (5-5) has now lost all seven meetings with the Hoyas.

The Retrievers led 15-9 lead with 14:07 left in the first half after Banks knocked in UMBC’s third 3-pointer of the game without a miss. Bryce Johnson and Louie Jordan also connected.

However, UMBC missed its next nine 3-pointers and finished 4 of 18 for the game after going 14 of 26 in its most recent outing, a blowout of Morgan State on Wednesday. UMBC entered Monday shooting 40.4 percent on treys.

While UMBC was letting them fly from outside early, the Hoyas did their damage in the post. Using a strong inside game, Georgetown took a 27-21 lead on Mack’s layup with 7:27 left.

Epps found Drew Fielder for a dunk to make it 30-21, and then Epps drove the lane for a layup to extend the lead to 32-21. Fielder finished with eight points and nine rebounds.

Georgetown was ahead 41-35 at the half.

Peavy’s basket gave the Hoyas a 59-43 lead with 12:11 left. Georgetown had 11 offensive rebounds and finished the game with 11 dunks.

Epps nailed a 3-pointer to raise the Hoyas’ lead to 66-45 lead with 10:03 left. Georgetown shot 48.5 percent from the field but made just 3 of 20 from deep.

The Hoyas opened the second half on a 29-12 run.

Georgetown was without reserve Julius Halaifonua for the second straight game. The school announced prior to tip-off that the 7-foot freshman from New Zealand fractured his left ankle and will undergo surgery. No timetable for a return was given.
