Jackson State stuns Missouri 73-72 for first victory

Chase Adams hit the game-winning shot with 3 seconds left to lift previously winless Jackson State to a 73-72 upset Missouri on Sunday in Columbia, Mo.

After Nick Honor made 1 of 2 free throws to put Missouri ahead 72-71, Adams answered with his winning mid-range jumper. Sean East II pushed the ball back downcourt for Missouri, but he lost the ball in the lane as time expired.

Ken Evans Jr. scored 22 points, Jordan O’Neal scored 18 and Coltie Young added 14 for Jackson State (1-5), which is opening its season with nine true road games.

Honor scored 17 points and Caleb Grill added 15 for Missouri (3-2).

Missouri turned the ball over 18 times. The Tigers used 13 players, 11 of whom scored, but they could not wear down their road-weary opponent.

Jackson State used a 7-0 run to jump to an early 10-7 lead. Young sank a 3-point jumper, O’Neal threw down a dunk shot and Evans added a driving layup.

Missouri turned the ball over seven times in the first 9:08 of the game as Jackson State pushed its advantage to 18-13.

Jesus Carralero Martin triggered Missouri’s 13-2 response. His steal led to Anthony Robinson II’s layup, then he hit a 3-point shot from the corner.

Noah Carter scored in the post and hit a 3-pointer jumper off Carralero Martin’s pass to establish a 26-20 lead.

After Evans and O’Neal helped Jackson State move ahead 32-31, Missouri answered with a 6-0 run with East, Carter and Robinson scoring in the paint.

Honor’s 3-point jumper coming out of the half put Missouri up 40-34, but Jackson State went on a 9-0 run capped by O’Neal’s dunk.

With Missouri up 57-50, Jackson State rallied with an 11-2 run to take a 61-59 lead with 6:56 left.

Honor drove for a three-point play and Tamar Bates scored on a cut to the basket to give Missouri a 69-63 lead. But Jackson State scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game at 71 in the closing seconds.
