JT Toppin shines as No. 12 Texas Tech dispatches Oklahoma State

JT Toppin poured in 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as No. 12 Texas Tech rolled to a 93-55 win over reeling Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon in Stillwater, Okla.

The Red Raiders (20-5, 11-3 Big 12) led by 19 points after a dominating first half and never let up, opening the second half with an 8-0 run. Texas Tech stretched its lead to 36 points with 4:50 to play on Toppin’s final shot and cruised to the finish line.

Texas Tech won its second straight game, ninth of its past 10 and swept the season series with Oklahoma State.

Toppin has scored a combined 94 points in Tech’s past three games. Christian Anderson racked up 16 points for the Red Raiders, Kevin Overton had 13, Elijah Hawkins added 11 while Chance McMillian hit for 10.

Texas Tech outshot Oklahoma State from the field, 48.4 percent to 37.3 percent, forged a 40-29 edge on the glass and scored 21 points off 14 turnovers for the Cowboys. The Red Raider shot 43.2 percent (16 of 37) from beyond the arc and recorded 23 assists on 30 made baskets.

Marchelus Avery’s 13 points led the Cowboys (12-13, 4-10) in the loss, their second straight and third in their past four games.

The Red Raiders took charge early on, building a 12-5 lead after a pair of free throws by McMillian at the 14:44 mark of the first half. Oklahoma State pared its deficit to three points before Texas Tech reeled off an 8-0 run that was capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from Anderson for a 20-9 advantage with 12:11 to play in the first half.

Texas Tech stretched its advantage to 16 points on Kerwin Walton’s 3-pointer with 1:22 to play in the half. A layup and then two free throws by Toppin, the latter with 24 seconds remaining, stretched the margin to 20 points before the Red Raiders settled for a 43-24 lead at the break.

Toppin led all scorers with 16 points and eight rebounds by halftime while Abou Ousmane paced the Cowboys with eight points. Texas Tech limited Oklahoma State to 30.8 percent shooting in the half.
