Maryland edges Indiana 79-78 for another key road win

Maryland Terrapins basketball coach

Rodney Rice scored a game-high 23 points Sunday, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left, as visiting Maryland rallied for a 79-78 Big Ten Conference decision over Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.

Rice, who was 8 of 13 from the field and 5 of 7 from 3, came off a dribble handoff from Julian Reese and swished his late go-ahead shot with a defender running at him. The outcome gave the Terrapins (16-5, 6-4) their second road win in four days, including one at No. 17 Illinois, after having none all season.

The Hoosiers (14-7, 5-5) had a chance to win but settled for a contested corner 3-pointer by Myles Rice just before time expired that never touched the rim. It was their fourth loss in five games.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 18 points and nine assists for Maryland, which also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Reese. Selton Miguel kicked in 15 points as the Terrapins converted 49.2 percent of their field goals, while going 12 of 24 on 3-pointers.

Myles Rice and Mackenzie Mgbako each scored 16 points for Indiana, which also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Oumar Ballo. Malik Reneau hit for 10 points, while going 5 of 14 from the floor.

With inside play the focus, Maryland scored a whopping 62 points in the paint Thursday night in their 91-70 victory at Illinois, while Indiana has played through the 7-1 Ballo for the majority of its conference games.

The Hoosiers got off to a quick, efficient start, taking a 19-16 lead at the 11:33 mark when Kanaan Carlyle tipped home the miss of Luke Goode’s 3-point attempt. At that point, 16 of their points came in the lane.

The Terrapins got the upper hand with a 7-0 run that saw Gillespie record a basket or an assist on all seven points. They maintained a narrow advantage, going into halftime with a 38-37 edge.
