Maryland shakes off slow start to steamroll St. Francis (Pa.)

Selton Miguel scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting as Maryland rolled to a 111-57 win over St. Francis (Pa.) Tuesday night in College Park, Md.

Rodney Rice scored 16 points and Derik Queen contributed 15 points for the Terrapins (9-2), who trailed for most of the first 10 minutes before dominating the rest of the way.

Julian Reese had 11 points and 12 rebounds, helping Maryland to a 43-20 edge on the boards. Tafara Gapare contributed to the dominance on the glass, collecting eight rebounds to go along with nine points off the bench.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 11 points and six assists for the Terrapins, who made 61.8 percent of their shots from the floor and established a new season high with made 15 triples on 26 attempts (57.7 percent).

Miguel led Maryland’s marksmanship from deep, hitting 4 of 6 attempts. Jayhlon Young made all three of his 3-point tries, while Gillespie and Rice each made 3 of 6 from distance.

Julian Cranford Jr. scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting to pace St. Francis (4-8) of the Northeast Conference. Jeremy Clayville added 11 points for the Red Flash.

Maryland shut out St. Francis’ top scorer Bobby Rosenberger III (13.5 points per game), who missed all eight of his shots from the floor.

Midway through the first half, Clayville hit a pair of jumpers from beyond the arc, which were part of an 8-0 run that put the Red Flash up 21-17.

But Maryland responded with an 18-2 run to take the lead for good.

Queen started the spree with a hook shot and added another from inside the lane. Gillespie and Miguel each contributed a 3-pointer, and Rice capped the run with six straight points to put the Terrapins up 35-23 with 5:30 left in the half.

Rice and Miguel later made back-to-back 3-pointers as Maryland stretched its lead to 55-29 at the break.

The Terrapins dominated the Red Flash in the open floor, holding a 29-7 advantage in fastbreak points and a 33-4 edge in points off turnovers.
