No. 8 Michigan St. shocks No. 16 Maryland on halfcourt shot at buzzer

Michigan State

Tre Hollomon made a shot at the buzzer from just beyond halfcourt as No. 8 Michigan State stunned No. 16 Maryland 58-55 in College Park, Md., on Wednesday.

Hollomon’s Hail Mary came after Maryland’s Ja’Kobi Gillespie missed a 3-pointer with two seconds left. The Spartans’ Jaxon Kohler got the rebound and passed to Hollomon, who dribbled once and fired.

Hollomon scored all nine of his points in the second half to lead a Spartans bench that outscored the Terrapins’ reserves 23-0.

Jase Richardson scored 15 points for Michigan State (23-5, 14-3 Big Ten), which won its fourth straight. The last three have come against ranked teams. It also was the Spartans’ seventh straight victory over Maryland and third in a row in College Park.

The Spartans did it by controlling the tempo and employing their physical defense. They held the Terrapins, who had scored at least 69 points in each of their games, to their season-low output.

Maryland made 31.3 percent of its shots, including 4 of 20 (20 percent) from 3-point range, while Michigan State wasn’t much better at 33.8 percent shooting from the floor and 4 of 15 26.7 percent) from deep.

Rodney Rice scored 20 points to pace Maryland (21-7, 11-6), which had won eight of its previous nine games.

Gillespie scored 15 points and Derik Queen contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins.

Richardson rose late in the game, scoring six straight points in a span of 68 seconds to give the Spartans their biggest lead of the night at 52-43 with 5:24 left.

But Maryland charged back. Rice answered with a 3-pointer and Gillespie made 6 of 6 free throws in the final 2:12.

In the first five minutes of the game, Richardson scored seven points as the Spartans blasted to an 11-4 lead.

But the Terrapins answered with back-to-back three-point plays from Queen and Gillespie, and it remained close the rest of the way.

A buzzer-beating scoop shot from Selton Miguel gave Maryland a 23-21 lead at the break.

Early in the second half, the Spartans went on a 7-1 run, which included a 3-pointer by Xavier Booker and a two-fisted slam by Szymon Zapala, to take a 37-31 lead.

But midway through the half, Rice hit three free throws and then a 3-pointer to tie the game at 39-39 with 8:49 left.
