Sam Godwin registered game highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds Saturday night, while Kobe Elvis added 15 points as No. 13 Oklahoma improved to 10-0 with an 80-65 thumping of Bedlam rival Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City.
In the first nonconference game between the two since 1958, it was all Sooners as they led for all but 25 seconds. Oklahoma shot 49.2 percent from the field and earned a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint.
Freshman Jeremiah Fears contributed 17 points for the Sooners, which stifled the Cowboys (6-3) on the defensive end. Oklahoma State hit only 39.3 percent from the field, including just 5-of-18 from 3-point range, and coughed up 16 turnovers that led to 21 points.
Marchelus Avery came off the bench to score 19 points for the Cowboys, who got only 23 points from their starting lineup. Bryce Thompson, their third-leading scorer at 11.3 points per game, managed just two points on 1 of 6 shooting.
Godwin got Oklahoma going early, scoring its first three baskets, two off Elvis feeds. The Sooners controlled things throughout, preventing Oklahoma State from being able to push the pace with its full-court pressure defense.
Fears dunked after a steal with 8:43 left in the first half to give Oklahoma its first double-figure lead at 23-13. That was part of an 11-0 run that Elvis capped with one of his five 3-pointers from the top of the key to make it 30-13 at the 6:42 mark.
The Cowboys went 4:19 without scoring during that spurt and couldn’t make enough of their shots or string together enough stops to get back into the game. Luke Northweather sent the Sooners into halftime with a corner 3-pointer that made it 43-25.
Another 3-pointer by Elvis upped the margin to 51-29 with 17:24 left and Oklahoma coasted from there. It led by as many as 27 with 3:27 remaining before Oklahoma State made it more respectable with a game-ending 16-4 burst.
