Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark scored 18 points each to lead a balanced scoring effort and Texas pulled away in the second half to rout LSU 89-58 on Saturday in Baton Rouge, La.
Kadin Shedrick added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Arthur Kaluma scored 10 for the Longhorns (15-7, 4-5 SEC), who had a 58-33 scoring advantage in the second half and never trailed in the game.
Jordan Sears scored 13 to lead the Tigers (12-9, 1-7), who shot 13.3 percent (2 of 15) on 3-pointers. LSU’s bench outscored the team’s starters 37-21, but couldn’t keep up with Texas, which shot 56.3 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent (10 of 21) on 3-pointers.
The Longhorns began the second half with an 8-4 run that produced a 39-29 lead. Corey Chest answered with a layup for LSU, but Texas scored the next 10 points to increase the lead to 49-31.
Trey’dez Green made a jumper to stop the run, but Mark and Jordan Pope each a made a 3-pointer and the Longhorns pushed the lead to 20. Texas led by 20 twice more midway through the half before Cam Carter made two free throws for the Tigers, but Devon Pryor answered with a 3-pointer and the lead grew to as much as 33 points.
Shedrick scored the first four points of the game and Texas never trailed in the first half, though LSU scored the next four points. Kaluma’s 3-pointer broke the tie and started a 6-0 run for the Longhorns.
The Tigers closed within three points on a 3-pointer by Vyctorius Miller, but Johnson and Kaluma each made a 3-pointer and Texas expanded the lead to 24-15. Sears and Mike Williams III each made a jumper and a layup to help LSU get within three points again.
Shedrick made a 3-pointer and Jayson Kent hit a jumper before Williams made a layup for the only points for either team in the final four minutes, leaving the Longhorns with a 31-25 halftime lead.
