Texas Tech holds off Oklahoma State for fourth straight win

texas tech

Chance McMillian scored 14 points and Texas Tech’s defense did the rest as the Red Raiders defeated stumbling Oklahoma State 64-54 on Sunday afternoon in a Big 12 Conference game in Lubbock, Texas.

The Red Raiders (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) never trailed, led by 10 points and halftime and by 18 nine minutes into the second half. Oklahoma State rallied, forging a 16-1 run to whittle its deficit to 52-49 on a layup by Arturo Dean with 5:09 left.

But that’s as close as the Cowboys would get. Texas Tech produced a 7-2 run capped by a 3-pointer by Kevin Overton with 2:24 to play to boost its lead to eight points and held on by making free throws down the stretch.

Darrion Williams added nine points for the Red Raiders’ balanced attack while Federiko Federiko contributed eight points and eight rebounds. Texas Tech has won four straight games.

Bryce Thompson led Oklahoma State (10-9, 2-6 Big 12) with 17 points, with Dean hitting for 11 and Abou Ousmane racking up 10 points and 10 boards. The Cowboys have dropped two games in a row and four of their past five.

Oklahoma State outshot the Red Raiders 45.2 percent to 44 percent but also committed 22 turnovers that Texas Tech turned into 20 points.

The Red Raiders jumped to the front early on, forging a 16-7 lead when McMillian hit a putback layup at the 14:33 mark of the first half. Oklahoma State trimmed its deficit to two points thrice over the ensuing 4 1/2 minutes, the latter on a 3-pointer by Thompson with 9:57 left in the half.

The Cowboys closed to within 24-23 on a layup by Thompson with 6:09 left. But Texas Tech responded with a layup from Overton before Elijah Hawkins’ wild shot from near the top of the key just beat the shot clock. JT Toppin’s jumper pushed the lead back to six points with 3:36 remaining until halftime.

Christian Anderson (nine points) then canned a 3-pointer that extended the Red Raiders’ advantage to 33-24 on the way to a 37-27 lead at the break.

McMillian led all scorers with 11 points before halftime while Ousmane paced the Cowboys with eight points.
