Top 25 roundup: No. 15 Memphis outlasts Tulsa

Jahvon Quinerly drilled a 3-pointer with four seconds left as No. 15 Memphis survived blowing a seven-point lead in 17 seconds during the final minute, outlasting host Tulsa 78-75 on Thursday night.

The Tigers (12-2, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) led 75-68 with 1:03 remaining after Nick Jourdain notched a putback dunk, but the Golden Hurricane (9-4, 0-1) rallied. Carlous Williams made a jumper, then Cobe Williams scored five points off two turnovers to tie the game with 33 seconds left.

But Quinerly, whose offensive foul preceded Tulsa’s game-tying 3-pointer, made up for that mistake with the game-winner that extended Memphis’ winning streak to seven games.

Five players scored in double figures for the Tigers, led by David Jones and Nae’Qwan Tomlin with 17 points apiece. Redshirt freshman guard PJ Haggerty starred in defeat for Tulsa with a game-high 27 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

No. 10 Arizona 97, Colorado 50

Pelle Larsson had 18 points and seven rebounds and the Wildcats mauled the Buffaloes from the outset in Pac-12 play at Tucson, Ariz.

Caleb Love had 16 points and Motiejus Krivas added 15 points and nine rebounds for Arizona (11-3, 2-1 Pac-12). Kylan Boswell made four 3-pointers while registering 14 points and three steals for Arizona, which never trailed.

Javon Ruffin scored 11 points for Colorado (11-3, 2-1), which had a six-game winning streak halted.

No. 19 James Madison 68, Louisiana 61

Noah Freidel hit a clutch 3-pointer with 47 seconds left as the Dukes staved off a rally by Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette, La.

Freidel, who finished with 11 points and six rebounds, also made a key jumper just inside the 3-point line with 1:50 left as James Madison (14-0, 2-0 Sun Belt) snapped Louisiana’s 19-game home winning streak.

Kentrell Garnett scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half to spearhead the rally by Louisiana (7-7, 0-2).

No. 24 Gonzaga 86, Pepperdine 60

Graham Ike recorded 20 points and seven rebounds and the Bulldogs defeated the Waves for the 46th consecutive time, prevailing in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams in Spokane, Wash.

Anton Watson scored 15 points and Nolan Hickman added 14 as Gonzaga (10-4, 1-0 WCC) won its 28th consecutive WCC opener, including all 25 during coach Mark Few’s tenure at the school.

Houston Mallette scored 15 points but was only 2-of-9 shooting for Pepperdine (7-9, 0-1). Michael Ajayi had 14 points and matched his career best of 14 rebounds for Pepperdine but made just 3 of 15 field-goal attempts.
