Ugonna Onyenso scored a career-high 18 points and added 10 rebounds on Tuesday, as Virginia blew past Hampton for a 91-53 victory in Charlottesville, Va.
Chance Mallory added 16 points, while Sam Lewis scored 13 for the Cavaliers (3-0), who connected on 11 of their 22 3-point attempts and held Hampton to 31.7% (20-of-63) shooting from the field. Malik Thomas chipped in 11 points and Jacari White finished with 10 points in the win.
Michael Eley led Hampton (1-2) with 16 points off the bench, followed by Quintin Cooper’s eight points and Elijah Kennedy’s six. The Pirates have dropped both of their games against Division I opponents, with their victory coming against Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Hampton was outrebounded 49-25 in defeat and shot 6-of-26 (23.1%) on 3-pointers.
Virginia opened up a 58-23 lead at the 16:41 mark of the second half, as Thomas drilled a 3-pointer off Dallin Hall’s assist.
Kody Williams’ layup cut Hampton’s deficit to 62-31, but Mallory’s lay-up jumpstarted a Cavaliers’ 11-0 spurt, which was finished with Mallory’s free throws with 11:04 remaining.
Eley’s 3-pointer pulled the Pirates within 10-8 with 13:44 left in the first half, before White’s mid-range jumper and Mallory’s three-point play began a 9-2 Virginia run. Thijs De Ridder’s layup at the 9:05 mark gave the Cavaliers their first double-digit lead at 25-14.
Virginia held Hampton without a field goal for more than five minutes, before Josh Ogundele’s layup cut the Pirates’ deficit to 35-17 with 5:07 remaining. The Cavaliers finished the opening half on a 10-0 run, with Onyenso’s 3-pointer in the closing seconds giving Virginia a 47-19 lead.
Virginia shot 61.5% (16-of-26) from the field in the first 20 minutes, while outrebounding Hampton 22-8.
