North Carolina legend Lennie Rosenbluth, who led the Tar Heels to an undefeated season and the national title in 1957, has died. He was 89.
No cause of death was given by the school in its announcement.
Rosenbluth and the Heels defeated the Wilt Chamberlain-led Kansas Jayhawks in triple overtime to win the title.
“He had such a dignity about him,” former UNC head coach Roy Williams said in a statement. “The guys who came after him, they talked about Lennie with reverence. There was always something special about him.”
Rosenbluth still holds the Carolina single-season record for scoring, when he averaged 28.0 points per game in ’57. He scored 897 points, also a record. Carolina retired his No. 10 jersey, one of only eight to be retired by the school.
Rosenbluth was selected No. 6 overall in the 1957 NBA draft by the Philadelphia Warriors. He played just two seasons, averaging 4.2 points in 82 career games.
