New Vanderbilt coach Mark Byington won his debut as the host Commodores committed just one turnover in beating Maryland Eastern Shore 102-63 in Nashville, Tenn., on Monday night.
Boston College transfer Devin McGlockton (24 points, 13 rebounds) and Jaylen Carey (13 and 10), who followed Byington from James Madison, notched double-doubles in their Vanderbilt debuts.
McGlockton hit all 10 of his shots from the floor and added a pair of blocks.
Jason Edwards (19 points) and Tyler Nickel (14) also scored in double figures. Edwards handed out five of Vanderbilt’s 18 assists.
It was the Commodores’ first 100-point game since Nov. 27, 2018, a 120-85 win over Savannah State.
UMES’ Ketron “KC” Shaw, who came with new coach Cleo Hill from Winston-Salem State, scored 23 points while Cardell Bailey added 10.
The deeper Commodores pulled away midway through the second half from a UMES team that only dressed nine players.
Chris Manon hit a driving layup with 9:41 left, capping a 9-0 run and giving Vanderbilt its biggest lead to that point at 76-47.
UMES played zone for nearly the entire first half, but Vanderbilt shot much better from 2 (13-of-18) than 3 (4-of-18, 22.2 percent) in building a 45-33 halftime lead.
The Commodores came out playing fast, and it didn’t take long for their first double-digit lead when Carey hit a jumper in the paint to make it 15-5 with 13:55 left in the half.
The Commodores took their first 20-point lead (38-18) when Tyler Tanner picked off a Shaw pass and raced for a fast-break dunk with 5:27 left in the half.
Shaw kept the Hawks in it, hitting a jumper and a layup in the final minute as part of 16 first-half points.
AJ Hoggard, a Michigan State transfer who’ll likely be Vanderbilt’s starting point guard, didn’t play due to a one-game NCAA suspension for playing in the Portsmouth Invitational, a non-certified, pre-draft event in the spring.
