An Indiana State freshman defensive back died in a weekend automobile accident.

The Lakota East High School football program identified the deceased as alumnus Caleb VanHooser.

“It is with heavy heart that we mourn the loss of Caleb VanHooser, former Hawk great, and Indiana State football player who was called home to Heaven early this morning,” the school posted Sunday on Twitter. “We will never forget his contributions to our program. RIP#2. We love you.”

Indiana State released a statement confirming that three people died in a single-vehicle crash. Police said that five people were in the vehicle and all are believed to be ISU students, including several football players.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” university president Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said. “As we are waiting on additional details from authorities investigating this accident, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the students involved.”

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office told WTHR that the crash happened at about 1:34 a.m. local time on Sunday. A vehicle traveling on State Road 46, not far from the Sycamores’ campus, veered off the road and struck a tree before catching fire.

VanHooser played defensive back and wide receiver and also ran track at Lakota East, located in the Cincinnati suburb of Liberty Township, Ohio.
