LaNorris Sellers pushes No. 18 South Carolina past Wofford

LaNorris Sellers threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns — and rushed for another score — as No. 18 South Carolina rolled to its fifth straight victory, topping in-state FCS foe Wofford 56-12 on Saturday in Columbia.

Sellers completed 23-of-27 passes and ran for 53 yards on 13 carries for the Gamecocks (8-3). After throwing an early interception, Sellers settled in and completed 17 of his next 18 throws, a stretch that included two of his touchdown tosses. Dalevon Campbell hauled in five of Sellers’ targets for 120 yards, and the South Carolina offense was also boosted by Raheim Sanders rushing for 72 yards and a score on 15 carries.

For Wofford (5-7), Amari Odom finished with 215 passing yards and a touchdown while completing 15-of-28 passes.

The Terriers actually got on the board first with Devery Cagle capping off the game’s opening five-play 66-yard drive with a 27-yard field goal. Sellers threw his lone interception of the day to end South Carolina’s first possession, but the Gamecocks forced the Terriers into a quick three-and-out to get the ball back.

Nine of South Carolina’s ten drives after that ended with touchdowns. The final series of the day for the Gamecocks’ offense — a 10-play, 85-yard drive that chewed up about four minutes of clock — ended with the first career rushing touchdown for redshirt senior walk-on running back Bradley Dunn, a five-yard scoring tote.

Wofford’s only touchdown came in the second quarter when Odom ended a 10-play drive with a six-yard scoring strike to Dylan Djete.

South Carolina converted on 10-of-12 third down tries, while Wofford converted just 2-of-12. The Gamecocks held the Terriers to just 28 rushing yards while piling up 265 yards on the ground on their own.

All that remains on South Carolina’s regular season schedule is a nonconference clash next Saturday at rival No. 17 Clemson — a game that could have an impact on the College Football Playoff.

With the victory over Wofford, South Carolina coach Shane Beamer tied Steve Spurrier for the most wins by a Gamecock head coach in their first four seasons.
