Miami is set to name Houston’s Shannon Dawson as its new offensive coordinator, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.
He would replace Josh Gattis, fired by the Hurricanes last month after the 5-7 inaugural season of head coach Mario Cristobal.
Miami hired Lance Guidry as its new defensive coordinator last week, part of a turbulent offseason for Cristobal’s coaching staff. That hire led to the exit of co-defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.
Dawson, 45, has been the OC and quarterbacks coach at Houston for the past three seasons, part of his four seasons under head coach Dana Holgorsen. Dawson was also with Holgorsen at West Virginia.
The Cougars averaged 36-plus points per game in each of the last two seasons under Dawson, who has OC stints at West Virginia (2012-14), Kentucky (2015) and Southern Miss (2016-18).
The Hurricanes finished 86th in total offense (averaging 367.1 yards per game) and 97th in scoring (23.6 points) last season under Gattis.
Dawson is Miami’s fifth offensive coordinator in the past six seasons.
Guidry replaced Kevin Steele, who left after one season to rejoin Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama as DC.
