Angel City penalized 3 standings points for salary cap infraction

The National Women’s Soccer League handed down a $200,000 fine to Angel City FC and docked the club three points in the 2024 regular-season standings Thursday following an investigation into violations of salary cap rules.

The league also suspended Angel City president and CEO Julie Uhrman and general manager Angel Hucles Mangano from “conducting duties relating to any player transactions” for the rest of the calendar year.

The Los Angeles-based club was already on the outside of the playoff picture entering the final month of the season, but the penalty dropped Angel City (6-12-4) from 22 points to 19 points, leaving them in 12th place in the 14-team league and nine points out of the eighth and final playoff spot.

In a news release, the NWSL said its investigation unveiled that Angel City had entered into five side agreements with players that compensated them outside of their contracts and were not disclosed to the league.

“Due to these undisclosed benefits, ACFC exceeded the salary cap by approximately $50,000 for four weeks during the 2024 season,” the league’s statement said.

The players who received extra compensation were not revealed. Angel City have yet to comment.
