Brandon Saad’s late goal caps Blues’ rally past Flames

Brandon Saad scored his second goal of the game in the final minute to give the visiting St. Louis Blues a 4-3 comeback victory over the slumping Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Brayden Schenn and Jordan Kyrou also scored for the Blues, who won for only the second time this season when trailing through two periods. Goaltender Jordan Binnington made 32 saves. Nick Leddy collected three assists and Colton Parayko added two helpers.

Yegor Sharangovich collected one goal and one assist, while MacKenzie Weegar and Noah Hanifin each scored for the Flames, who have lost three straight games. Goalie Jacob Markstrom, who returned to the lineup after missing three games due to injury, stopped 22 shots.

With overtime looming, Saad was on a rush and rifled a glove-side shot inside the far post for his 13th goal of the season with 48 seconds remaining. The Blues have won two straight, this one with an impressive road comeback.

The hosts held a 3-1 lead but the Blues clawed back, starting with Schenn’s first career short-handed goal, a breakaway tally for his 11th of the season that made it a one-goal game with 2:47 remaining in the second period.

Kyrou tied the clash at 6:56 of the third period when he worked to the slot and found the net with a long shot for his 13th of the season, which set the stage for Saad’s late heroics.

The Flames, who have one win in four outings to kick off a crucial six-game homestand, were in a good position to end their slide.

Weegar opened the scoring at the 11:38 mark of the game when he worked from his point position to the left face-off dot and ripped a short-side, top-corner offering from the left face-off dot for his 11th goal of the season.

Saad tied the score at 8:27 of the second period with a short-side shot of his own.

The Flames responded shortly after with a pair of goals 64 seconds apart. Hanifin notched his eighth goal of the campaign with a one-timer from the left face-off dot. Then Sharangovich made it a 3-1 game by shooting on an odd-man rush for his 20th of the season.
