Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract extension on Friday morning.
The deal begins next season and extends through the 2030-31 campaign.
Matheson is playing in the final season of an eight-year, $39 million contract. He was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Matheson, 31, has collected 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) and a plus-13 rating in 22 games this season. He averages a team-best 24:50 of ice time.
Matheson has totaled 279 points (78 goals, 201 assists) in 649 career games with the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Canadiens. He was selected by the Panthers with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft.
