Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert sustained fractured rib cartilage during Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs and is considered day-to-day, coach Brandon Staley said Friday.

Staley added that the team will assess Herbert’s status next week to determine whether he can participate in practice. The Chargers (1-1) host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 25.

Herbert underwent medical testing on Friday to determine the extent of the injury he sustained in the fourth quarter of Los Angeles’ 27-24 loss to the Chiefs.

Herbert was driven to the ground by Chiefs defensive end Mike Danna with 5:01 left in the final quarter and was in obvious pain.

NFL Network initially reported that X-rays were believed to be negative, but that additional testing was needed to reveal any possible injuries to rib cartilage or internal injuries.

Herbert, 24, threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Joshua Palmer with 1:15 remaining in the game as he tried to rally the Chargers from a 10-point deficit. He finished the game 33-of-48 passing for 334 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.
