Charlie Lindgren, Capitals end Kings’ winning streak

Charlie Lindgren made 38 saves, including 15 in the third period, to help the visiting Washington Capitals beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Anthony Mantha and Connor McMichael each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who had lost two in a row. Aliaksei Protas had two assists.

Arthur Kaliyev scored for the Kings, who had won five straight. Cam Talbot made 13 saves.

The Kings were 0-for-3 with the man advantage. The Capitals did not get a power play.

Anze Kopitar appeared to tie the game 2-2 at 11:10 of the third period, knocking in a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Adrian Kempe. Washington challenged the play and, after a video review, it was ruled the Kings were offside entering the zone.

Los Angeles got a power play less than a minute later but could not capitalize.

Lindgren then made a stellar save on Kempe in front with 3:58 remaining, and Kempe skated out from behind Lindgren and hit the crossbar with just under three minutes to play.

Washington was outshot 14-3 in the third period.

Kaliyev gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 9:04 of the first period with his fifth of the season. Andreas Englund’s slap shot from the point deflected off the end boards and out into the slot, where Kaliyev knocked it past Lindgren.

The Kings were 11-0-1 when scoring first this season.

Mantha tied the score 1-1 at 12:12 of the first, converting a pass across the slot from McMichael on a two-on-one rush for his fourth goal of the season.

Lindgren stopped Kempe on a breakaway midway through the second period.

McMichael gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead at 18:30 of the second period. Talbot made the initial save on Mantha in front, but the puck deflected up into the air and McMichael batted it home for his fifth goal of the season.
