Team USA is in danger of finishing with the second-most Olympic gold medals for the first time in 16 years.
With the final full day of the Paris Games in the books, the Americans trail China in golds (39-38) heading into Sunday. The closing ceremony is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
China last got the best of the U.S. when it hosted the 2008 Beijing Olympics, collecting 48 golds to the Americans’ 36. Team USA has racked up the most golds at every edition of the Summer Games since then.
All hope is not lost, though, as the United States has its women’s volleyball team and women’s basketball team competing in gold-medal games on Sunday.
The Americans still sit atop the overall medal table with 122. The Chinese have 90, and third-place Great Britain has 63. France (62 total medals) and Australia (50) round out the top five.
Australia and Japan are tied for third in gold medals with 18 apiece.
