Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. will not be placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his right thumb Friday, coach Dan Quinn said.
Forbes posted on his Instagram account that “surgery went well” to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
The injury occurred in the Commanders’ 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Forbes made four tackles.
Quinn said Forbes will miss the team’s home opener against the New York Giants (0-1) on Sunday. If Forbes was to go on injured reserve, he is required to miss at least four games.
He was a full participant on Wednesday and limited at practice on Thursday. Quinn said earlier this week that Forbes will wear a splint to protect the thumb.
The Commanders selected Forbes with the No. 16 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.
Forbes, 23, made 38 tackles, defended 11 passes and had one interception in 14 games (six starts) in his rookie season.
