Coyotes score 6 unanswered goals to rally past Knights

Golden Knights Coyotes

Michael Carcone scored twice while Alex Kerfoot added one goal and one assist as the host Arizona Coyotes scored six unanswered goals in the third period to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 7-4 Friday night in Tempe, Ariz.

Josh Doan, Nick Bjugstad, Josh Brown and Logan Cooley also tallied for the Coyotes (32-39-5, 69 points), who trailed 4-1 eight minutes into the third period before mounting an incredible comeback against the defending Stanley Cup champs. Goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 20 saves.

William Karlsson scored once in a two-point performance, while Jack Eichel, Anthony Mantha and Chandler Stephenson added singles for Vegas (42-26-8, 92 points). Goalie Logan Thompson stopped 25 shots for the Golden Knights, who sit third in the Pacific Division and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.

Down 4-1 nearing the midway point of the final frame, the Coyotes responded with three goals in 67 seconds to tie the clash.

Doan provided the jolt at 8:19 of the final frame when his shot was stopped but bounced off a defender’s skate and into the net for his third goal in five career games.

After Bjugstad notched his 22nd of the season by snapping a shot from the slot during a rush, Carcone evened the score 10 seconds later when he blasted a shot from the left faceoff dot.

Moments after the Golden Knights had what appeared to be a go-ahead goal disallowed by an offside spotted on a challenge, Carcone scored his second of the game and 21st of the season with 5:13 remaining thanks to a shot that bounced off a defender.

Brown’s second of the season 61 seconds later added insurance before Cooley added an empty-net goal, his 18th of the campaign.

It was a stunning turn of events after Vegas staked its three-goal lead. Just over one minute after Kerfoot opened the scoring at 6:17 of the second period, Eichel pounced on a rebound for his 27th goal of the season.

Karlsson put the Golden Knights ahead with his 27th of the campaign at 11:08 of the middle frame, before setting up Mantha’s 23rd of the season three minutes later. Vegas appeared in complete control after Stephenson notched his 16th of the season with 1:52 remaining in the second period to make it a 4-1 count.
