New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be sidelined four to six weeks due to an MCL sprain, the team announced Friday.
Imaging revealed the severity of the injury for Markstrom, who careened awkwardly into the post after Boston Bruins forward Justin Brazeau crashed into the net during the teams’ game on Wednesday in Newark, N.J.
Per the team, Markstrom will begin a rehab program “under the guidance of the Devils’ athlete care staff.”
Markstrom’s injury puts his status in jeopardy for Team Sweden in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. The tournament will be held from Feb. 12-20 at Bell Centre in Montreal and TD Garden in Boston.
New Jersey will look to rely on veteran Jake Allen in the absence of Markstrom, who has flourished in his first season with the team. Markstrom was acquired by the Devils from the Calgary Flames on June 19 in exchange for defenseman Kevin Bahl and a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Markstrom, who turns 35 next Friday, owns a 21-9-5 record with three shutouts, a 2.20 goals-against average and .912 save percentage this season.
He is 236-205-62 with 23 shutouts, a 2.69 GAA and .909 save percentage in 15 seasons with the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, Flames and Devils.
Allen, 34, is in his second season with the Devils. In 15 games (14 starts) this campaign, he is 6-8-1 with a 2.66 GAA and .904 save percentage.
Also on Friday, the Devils recalled goaltender Isaac Poulter from Utica of the American Hockey League.
Poulter, 23, is 8-7-3 with a 2.90 GAA and .897 SP with the Comets this season.
