Emma Raducanu is bringing on a new coach in Francis Roig, who worked with Rafael Nadal for the better part of two decades, according to several reports Monday.
The 2021 U.S. Open champion has not had someone permanently in that role since her previous coach, Nick Cavaday, stepped down in January.
She has been working with coach Mark Petchey informally since March.
Raducanu, 22, reportedly went on a trial run with Roig shortly after her third-round exit from Wimbledon last month. She’s currently ranked No. 33 in the world as the top female British tennis player.
The Spanish coach will join Raducanu in the U.S. as she gears up to play the Cincinnati Open, the final hard-court tune-up for the U.S. Open.
Roig was Nadal’s No. 2 coach, under the Spaniard’s uncle Toni, from 2005 to 2022 and was part of all 22 of Nadal’s Grand Slam victories. Roig followed that stint by spending a year coaching Italian Matteo Berrettini.
