Flames ride hot start, shoot down Stars

Nazem Kadri, Rasmus Andersson and Chris Tanev collected one goal and one assist apiece as the visiting Calgary Flames rode a four-goal second period to a 6-5 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

Andrew Mangiapane, Trevor Lewis and Elias Lindholm also scored for the Flames. Goaltender Dan Vladar made 29 saves in what became a nail-biting finish.

Dallas’ Joe Pavelski recorded two goals and an assist and Tyler Seguin had one of each.

Captain Jamie Benn and Colin Miller also scored a goal for the Stars, who trailed 6-1 before a mounting a ferocious third-period comeback that fell just short. Goalie Scott Wedgewood stopped 30 shots.

Mangiapane scored on the game’s first shot just 25 seconds into the clash, converting a sweeping back-hand shot from the edge of the crease for his ninth goal of the season.

Lewis doubled the lead with his team on the power play. He pounced on the loose puck for his eighth goal of the season at the 8:10 mark.

Benn’s short-handed goal at 15:34 of the opening frame — his 16th goal of the campaign — provided a momentum boost for the Stars, but the Flames re-ignited.

Lindholm’s power-play tally restored Calgary’s two-goal edge just past the midway point of the second period. Lindholm’s goal came after Tyler Toffoli’s shot ricocheted off his leg for his 14th of the season.

Kadri’s 17th of the season, counted after a lengthy review for an offside challenge, extended the lead at 13:07.

Andersson’s rocket of a shot from the point found its way home with 3:22 remaining in the middle frame for his sixth of the season to give the visitors a four-goal lead. Tanev’s blast from the point 79 seconds later resulted in his first goal of the season to make it a 6-1 game.

Seguin appear to only staunch the bleeding when he netted his 11th of the season with 46 seconds remaining in the second period, but it gave the hosts a boost.

Pavelski’s redirect made it a 6-3 game 7:19 into the third period, and then he deflected another point shot for his 14th goal of the season with 7:06 remaining.

The Stars pulled within one when Miller’s third goal of the season came on a point shot with 4:37 left in regulation. Dallas, however, couldn’t find the equalizer despite a frantic push.
