Flyers clip Knights in OT for 4th straight win

Sean Couturier scored one minute into overtime as the Philadelphia Flyers extended their season-best winning streak to four games with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon.

Couturier stole the puck from Jack Eichel along the right boards and then fired a wrist shot from the high slot that bounced through the pads of Vegas goaltender Logan Thompson for the game-winner.

Just 34 seconds earlier, Eichel had clanged a shot off the post.

Couturier and Owen Tippett each had a goal and an assist and Sean Walker and Tyson Foerster also scored for Philadelphia, which snapped a four-game home losing streak. Travis Sanheim added a pair of assists and Carter Hart finished with 28 saves for the Flyers.

Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals and had an assist, Shea Theodore had two assists and William Karlsson also scored for Vegas, which lost for the fourth time in its last six games. Thompson made 34 saves in losing his third straight start.

Vegas had the better chances early in the first period, with Hart turning away back-to-back breakaways by Ivan Barbashev and Brett Howden in the first two minutes. The Flyers then took a 1-0 lead at the 15:29 mark thanks to a power-play goal by Tippett, who ripped a wrist shot from the high slot inside the far left post. It snapped an 0-for-26 drought on the man advantage for Philadelphia.

The Flyers made it 2-0 with another power-play goal 59 seconds into the second period, as Sanheim’s shot bounced off the end boards and went straight to Foerster in the low slot. Foerster then tallied his first goal of the season.

Vegas cut it to 2-1 just over three minutes later when Karlsson roofed a wrist shot from the left circle.

Vegas center Chandler Stephenson picked up a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a cross-checking penalty on Garnet Hathaway nearly midway through the period. But the Flyers failed to capitalize on the ensuing power play, with Eichel actually having the best scoring chance on a breakaway that Hart turned aside.

Marchessault then tied it, 2-2, at the 15:00 mark with a spinning backhand shot through Hart’s pads. But the Flyers needed just 25 seconds to regain the lead on Walker’s third marker of the campaign.

Vegas tied it 3-3 with 55 seconds left in the period on a five-on-three power play. Marchessault fired a wrist shot from the left circle for his ninth goal of the season.
